Pixelmator Pro includes extensive and full-featured support for AppleScript, the scripting language created by Apple that lets you directly control apps using instructions written in an English-like scripting language. There are many different ways you can use AppleScript to speed up and enhance your image editing workflows. For example, you can use it to automate repetitive tasks, such as changing the color of the background in, say, images to a specific shade of blue.

You can also create workflows that involve multiple applications — for example, if you need to take a set of texts from a Numbers spreadsheet and use them to label a series of images. You can even use AppleScript to extend the functionality of Pixelmator Pro itself, for example by writing a script that creates a 3D text effect using the built-in tools in the app.

You can find it in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. You can learn more about using the Script Editor here. Along with the standard AppleScript terms, every scriptable application has its own dictionary with the words and phrases specific to a particular app. AppleScript syntax is heavily based on English syntax, so even if you have no programming experience, you can often find out what a script does by simply reading it.

An empty application tell block looks like this:. There is a set hierarchy of objects, starting with the application object at the top. To edit an object, you have to tell that specific object to change something. As the hierarchy starts with the application object, when writing scripts for Pixelmator Pro, the first phrase will always be:. Open in Script Editor. Finally, layers can also contain effects. Note that color adjustments and styles are properties of layers, rather than separate objects contained by layers.

Like this:. Color adjustments and layer styles are properties of layers, so you can use the syntax above to edit them. Each layer will always have these properties and they will be editable. Effects are a little different. They are elements that are contained by layers or layer masks. To find out the properties of each object and the values they take, look them up in the app dictionary. To lean more about the AppleScript language itself, check out the list of useful resources at the end of this tutorial.

For some inspiration, here are a few example scripts, showing the kinds of things you can do with AppleScript and Pixelmator Pro. You can click here to learn more about displaying dialogs and alerts with AppleScript. If no document is open, the script will encounter an error and will not run. In this more complex example, the user is prompted for both the search string and the replacement string each time the script is run, making it much more useful and versatile!

One of our tutorials describes how to create a 3D text effect and one of its steps involves duplicating a layer 27 times and moving it down and to the right by 1 pixel. This is just the kind of repetitive task that AppleScript is perfect for! This is a more complex script and checks to make sure a single text layer is selected to avoid as many errors and accidental duplications as possible. It also adjusts the size of the effect to work equally well with smaller as well as larger layers.

A luminosity mask is a mask based on the brightness values of the image that usually masks out the brightest or darkest areas of the image, letting you adjust just one set of tones without affecting the others.

In order to create a luminosity mask, you need to follow quite a complex set of steps but, using AppleScript, you can extend the functionality of Pixelmator Pro to automate creating luminosity masks.

Select all layers and duplicate them. Use 20 pixels for the Radius and press OK. Then change the Blending to Screen. Using the Eraser Tool E , delete some areas to make the glow effect less strong.

The steps might seem a bit complex, but the effect is quite simple to achieve. The important thing is to pay attention to the details and try different solutions to overcome the lack of Layer Styles to create the bevel effect like we did using strokes and gaussian blur.

Click here to download the Pixelmator file used for this tutorial. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a very nice text effect inspired by the colors and some light effects used in the work of a great digital artist who uses the name Empire. His work can be seen at empireisok. Step 2 With the Type Tool T , type the text you want. Step 3 Add a new layer on top of the text layer, and then, using the Gradient Tool G , fill the layer with a gradient from pink to cyan.

Step 4 Create a new layer on top of the gradient layer and change the Blending to Screen. Step 6 Duplicate the text layer and move it to the top in front of the other layers.

Step 8 Duplicate the text effect group and move it 1 pixel up and to the left. Step 10 With the Eraser Tool E , start deleting the right side of each letter in order to add a 3D effect to the type. Step 15 Add another layer and fill it with white.

Step 21 With the Eraser Tool E , delete the edges of the light to make it fade away. Step 22 Now add another layer on top of the others but beneath the dark paper texture. Step 23 Select all layers and duplicate them. Conclusion The steps might seem a bit complex, but the effect is quite simple to achieve.

We'd love to take a closer look at why it's not working for you! As a graphic designer I need to do things on the fly and find myself frustrated with the features this app lacks. Many times I jump to this app to quickly put something together as a semi mock-up for clients.

Simple features the app lacks are essential to anyone who does graphic work. The distortion features in the app are pretty worthless imo. If I have a logo and need to add simple text I am unable to skew or italicize the text to fit image angles properly.

There needs to be a angle or skew tab in there to angle the text slant in a positive or negative direction. My second major issue is the same thing with images or object layers. There should be a free transform option or a skew or slant feature to grab individual points of an object to allow for easy manipulation.

If the app had those two features added I would give it 5 stars. There are some great features. But the app itself is very limiting with essential functions that limit the user.

Privacy practices may vary, for example, based on the features you use or your age. Learn More. App Store Preview. Still missing some key features compared to competing programs or software suites. If you've used other image editing software, the learning curve can be pretty steep. Overall, the experience with Pixelmator Pro has been extremely positive.

It is currently my go-to software for photo and image editing. With the super-resolution feature, I can be sure that my images will print at premium quality and that enlarging the photo will not result in blurriness. Pixelmator Pro is simple and easy to use, with amazing functionality. The super-resolution feature is a game-changer and allows for resizing images without loss of quality or a pixelated look.

There are several awesome presets to choose from, and the graph where you can change or saturate only certain colors in an image is truly amazing. Another game-changing feature is the ability to add text that will not get blurry at larger sizes.

There is the ability to export in. PNG and switch from. JPEG to. PNG which is really helpful. Pixelmator Pro is amazing, however there are certain aspects of using the software that are frustrating.

There is no native way to add highlighted text to images without creating workarounds. Since highlighted text is critical to everything from creating YouTube thumbnails, posters, invitations and graphic art, etc, this is a really frustrating aspect of using the software.

Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Other than that, my experience using Pixelmator Pro has been very positive. I started out using Pixelmator Pro because it was the cheapest, most accessible option out there for multi-function graphics design, including vector drawing.

However, because of the prevalence or dominance of other programs like Photoshop or Illustrator among other people and tools that are used in the design business, it has become superfluous among the other programs that I ended up needing to use more regularly. Pixelmator Pro is similar enough to Adobe PhotoShop that it was pretty easy to jump into using right away, despite being much more accessible price-wise.

It is incompatible and hard to use with other applications, and sometimes formatting doesn't work between programs. It also does not have as much online support or as many functions as Adobe Photoshop, so I don't use it as much.

Industry: Marketing and Advertising. As it's a one-time purchase product, it's definitely worth having in your toolkit, but it's been overshadowed by Canva in recent years. This was my main design tool for a few years and Ioved how it was like Photoshop, but much simpler. I especially liked toe colour picker tool and being able to resize easily. Lack of tools and Canva overtook them with stock images and design features.
